Farm Sanctuary was established in 1986 as the nation's first rescue and refuge for farmed animals, becoming the organization responsible for bringing farm animal welfare into mainstream consciousness. Over the past three decades, Farm Sanctuary has
remained committed to ending cruelty to farm animals and promoting compassionate vegan living through our comprehensive rescue, education and advocacy efforts. We have urged passage of the first U.S. laws to protect animals on farms; initiated the first cruelty convictions at stockyards and slaughterhouses; and established the largest rescue and adoption network for farm
animals in North America. Farm Sanctuary has provided lifelong care to thousands of rescued farm animals at our Upstate New York and Southern California sanctuaries. People from all over the world have visited our shelters and engaged in our programs to learn about the plight of farm animals and the far-reaching impact of factory farming upon people and our planet.

Official Charity Response

Farm Sanctuary has received a 4-star score from Charity Navigator for Accountability & Transparency, combined with 3-stars for Financial Health, for an overall 3-star rating. Charity Navigator’s Financial performance metrics take into account programmatic, administrative and fundraising expenses to assess whether an organization’s budget is adequately dedicated to the fulfillment of its charitable mission. Farm Sanctuary’s fundraising expenses totaled 17% of our operating budget as of 2018, which directly contributes to our 3-star rating. These expenses comprise Farm Sanctuary’s planned, strategic investments in fundraising capacity beginning in 2016 to build our organization’s endowment over the past several years, and as part of a capital campaign to expand our acclaimed farm animal refuge in Upstate New York. Farm Sanctuary is fortunate to have a healthy, multi-channel system of generating revenue that has sustained us through periods of economic uncertainty over the past 35 years, including the recent downturn caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. While some of these revenue channels are low cost and other fundraising initiatives more expensive, all are essential tools for engaging and sustaining supporters in our mission. Farm Sanctuary is committed to raising and spending the charitable funding required to carry out our work both efficiently and effectively. This commitment is not only to the animals depending upon us, but also to the donors and partners upon whom we depend. In late 2020, Farm Sanctuary will be launching a multi-year strategic plan, which will serve as a road map for achieving our mission-based goals and objectives in the critical years ahead. We anticipate that these significant investments in programming will not only decrease our fundraising ratio, but meaningfully expand our lifesaving impact for farmed animals.
