The mission of the Prevent Cancer Foundation is to save lives through cancer prevention and early detection. The Foundation focuses its energies and resources on those cancers - including breast, cervical, colorectal, lung, oral, prostate, skin, and testicular - that can be prevented through lifestyle changes or detection and treatment in their early stages. Since our inception almost 30 years ago, we have provided more than $140 million in support of cancer prevention and early detection research, education, advocacy, and community outreach programs nationwide and have played a pivotal role in developing a body of knowledge that is the basis for important prevention and early detection strategies. We have funded over 400 scientists at over 150 leading medical institutions across the country. Our public education programs have applied this scientific knowledge to teach the public on ways they can reduce their cancer risks.

Program Name: Awesome Games Done Quick
Problem

The gaming community is a very stigmatized group -- oftentimes even friends & families of gamers think they are just "wasting time." Awesome Games Done Quick was born from the desire to bring this group together to do some good and effect change in the world. They chose to tackle cancer, since nearly everyone has been impacted by these diseases.

Strategy

In 2016, AGDQ raised $1.2 million. By hosting this event with a common goal of doing good in the world, this group of gamers and speedrunners erases some of the negative perceptions around gaming. The event gets a lot of media coverage (more than 200 media hits), which helps with change the perception of gamers/gaming. After the money is raised, the Prevent Cancer Foundation uses it to fund research grants & more. These grants go through the Foundation's regular grant review process.

IF:THEN

IF gamers from around the world unite for a common cause...

THEN we can raise substantial amounts of money

IF we raise money...

THEN we are able to fund research grants for cancer prevention and early detection

IF we fund promising research for cancer prevention and early detection...

THEN we can save lives
