Prior to 9/1/2016, Charity Navigator issued Advisories under the name CN Watchlist and Donor Advisory. For more information on the CN Advisory system click here. This charity was issued a DA.

This donor advisory was published on Thursday, November 21, 2013

Armenian Assembly of America has historically reported fundraising expenses on their Form 990.  But its FY 2011 and 2012 Forms 990 list no fundraising expenses. Based on our experience, charities only rarely are able to raise substantial sums of money without incurring any associated fundraising costs. We have reached out to Armenian Assembly of America for clarification, but we did not receive an adequate explanation. We are therefore unable to evaluate Armenian Assembly of America and thus have issued this Donor Advisory.

Historical CN Advisories

09/01/2016-04/01/2017: Moderate Concern Advisory

In accordance with our policy for removing CN Advisories, Charity Navigator removed the Moderate Concern CN Advisory for the Armenian Assembly of America on April 1, 2017 because the CN Advisory has been in place for more than a year (since November 19, 2013) and because the issues that prompted the CN Advisory have been resolved. Specifically:

  • The organization has now filed their FY 2013, 2014, and 2015 Forms 990, which report fundraising expenses.

Charity Navigator had published a Moderate Concern CN Advisory on the Armenian Assembly of America because we became aware of the following information in connection with this charity:

  • Armenian Assembly of America has historically reported fundraising expenses on their federal tax return called the Form 990. However, Armenian Assembly of America’s Fiscal Year Ending 2012 and Fiscal Year Ending 2011 Forms 990 do not list fundraising expenses. Based on our experience, charities are only rarely able to raise substantial sums of money without incurring any associated fundraising costs. We have reached out to Armenian Assembly of America for further clarification, but have not received an adequate explanation and have thus issued this Moderate Concern CN Advisory.
