To end animal cruelty. The largest animal sanctuary in the Pacific Northwest, our four comprehensive program areas include:

INVESTIGATIONS & RESCUE: We are helping to improve the response to crimes against animals through investigations, rescues and training programs.

SANCTUARY: Our 85 acre sanctuary is home to 150-250 animals - dogs, cats and farmed animals - most of whom arrived from cases of cruelty or neglect.

HOMELESSNESS PREVENTION: We are working to reduce shelter overpopulation through innovative spay/neuter and food bank programs.

OUTREACH: We offer tangible ways for people to help end animal cruelty through advocacy, engagement and informed consumer choices.

We were founded in 1997 in honor of "Pasado", a beloved donkey was tortured to death by three teenage boys.

2009-12 11/02/2010 --Donor Advisory

Prior to 9/1/2016, Charity Navigator issued Advisories under the name CN Watchlist and Donor Advisory. For more information on the CN Advisory system click here. This charity was issued a DA.

This donor advisory was published on Tuesday, November 2, 2010

In accordance with our policy for removing Donor Advisories, Charity Navigator removed the Donor Advisory for Pasado's Safe Haven in April 2013 because  the Donor Advisory had been in place for more than a year (since November 2, 2010) and because the issues that prompted the Donor Advisory have been resolved. Specifically:

  • More than a year has passed since Washington State's attorney general had completed its investigation and the charity has publicly shared the steps it has taken to address the concerns raised by the attorney general.
  • Visit the charity's site to read the attorney general's press release and Pasado's Safe Haven's response to the consent decree.

Charity Navigator had published a Donor Advisory for this charity because we became aware of the following information in connection with this charity:

  • On October 29, 2010, The Daily Herald reported that Pasado's Safe Haven "has agreed to reform its fundraising and business practices as part of a settlement reached to close a 16-month investigation by the state attorney general’s office." For more information please see the attorney general's ruling and a related article in The Daily Herald.
