Results Information

Program Name: Pure Farms, Pure Waters
Problem

Waste from a concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFO) can contain pathogens, nutrients, heavy metals, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. CAFO waste mismanagement negatively impacts public health and the environment. Health consequences, including respiratory illnesses, disparately impact residents near CAFOs. Impacts on water quality range from contribution to algal blooms and fish kills to chronic exceedance of water quality standards. A meaningful response is long overdue.

Strategy

We combine litigation, legal policy, advocacy, education, and outreach to impacted communities to advance our cause. We gather and publicize information regarding the location and specific impacts from CAFOs and take legal action in response to the most egregious violations. Our demand is that regulatory authorities enforce prohibitions on the discharge of animal waste into our waterways; we promote sound policies that protect communities from water pollution and support independent farmers.

IF:THEN

IF We make waste management information public to bring to light the negative environmental impacts from swine, poultry and dairy CAFOs while supporting food production systems that do not harm water quality, communities or farmers...

THEN We can hold corporations responsible for waste management solutions and force government agencies to properly regulate and enforce the law.

IF We inform the public about the negative public health and environmental impacts from CAFOs and document the location and concentration of those facilities across the state...

THEN We can support ongoing community advocacy and generate the political will necessary for government to protect citizens from pollution.
