El Museo del Barrio was founded in 1969 by a group of Puerto Rican educators, artists, parents and community activists in East Harlem's Spanish-speaking El Barrio. Since then, El Museo has evolved into New York's leading Latino cultural institution, having expanded its mission to represent the diversity of art and culture in all of the Caribbean and Latin America. As the only museum in New York City that specializes in representing these cultures, El Museo del Barrio continues to have a significant impact on the cultural life of New York City and is now a major stop on Manhattan's Museum Mile on Fifth Avenue. El Museo del Barrio thrives on the sustained excellence of its collections, exhibitions and public programming.

2010-06 04/24/2013 --Donor Advisory

Prior to 9/1/2016, Charity Navigator issued Advisories under the name CN Watchlist and Donor Advisory. For more information on the CN Advisory system click here. This charity was issued a DA.

This donor advisory was published on Wednesday, April 24, 2013

In accordance with our policy for removing Donor Advisories, Charity Navigator removed the Donor Advisory for El Museo del Barrio on July 1, 2015 because the Donor Advisory had been in place for more than a year and because:

  • On March 18, 2015, The Wallstreet Journal reported, "The board of El Museo [...] has elected former U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia as chairman."

Charity Navigator had published a Donor Advisory on El Museo Del Barrio because we became aware of the following information in connection with this charity:

  • On February 22, 2013, the New York Times reported that the "former director of El Museo del Barrio and the board of that museum are in a legal battle, with her claiming gender discrimination and a hostile workplace while the museum says she was dismissed for poor performance." The article specifically notes that "the former director, Margarita Aguilar, filed a claim with New York State human rights officials" in February 2013 about her concerns. For more information, please see the New York Times article.
  • On May 10, 2013, the New York Times reported that "El Museo del Barrio’s board president, who was named in a recent discrimination claim by the museum's former director, will leave her position at the end of her term on June 30 [2013]." For more details, please see the New York Times article.
  • On November 27, 2013, the New York Times reported that "the legal battle continues between Margarita Aguilar and officials at El Museo del Barrio in Manhattan after her firing as director of the museum earlier this year and her subsequent claim that she was the victim of gender discrimination and a hostile workplace. The New York State Division of Human Rights dismissed her complaints in September. Ms. Aguilar is now calling for that dismissal to be set aside, citing a shoddy investigation." The article goes on to note that "Tony Bechara, chairman of El Museo, said that the museum would fight the latest complaint. 'It has absolutely no merit,' he said in an interview on Wednesday. 'The commission dismissed it. It will hopefully be dismissed again.'" For more information, please see the New York Times article
