Program Name: Tropical Forests as Water Factories Managed by Rural Honduran Villagers
Problem

Despite abundant water resources and the fact that it houses the largest number of watersheds in Central America, Honduras has the 2nd lowest amount of water per capita in Central America due to mismanagement of and pressure on water resources. The Pico Bonito area has a high deforestation rate due to drought and forest fires, cattle ranching, invasive pests, and low-efficiency slash-and-burn agriculture. As a result, the health and security of rural villagers and urban dwellers are compromised.

Strategy

EcoLogic mobilizes community members, including partnerships with Honduras Education Department and Olanchito’s administration, to 1) plant trees and transition land users to eco-friendly practices, 2) facilitate effective and transparent planning & financing for upstream watershed conservation, 3) bring grassroots Honduran leaders to national and international sites to share learning and fine tune strategies. These strategies empower villagers and promote rural-to-urban idea innovation flow.

IF:THEN

IF IF rural communities prioritize conservation of the forests around water sources and streams...

THEN THEN we can ensure conservation of microwatersheds and sufficient water quality and quantity for communities

IF IF municipal leaders listen to and trust the experience of rural village leaders in grassroots mobilizing for financing of forest conservation and positive land use change...

THEN THEN they can adapt that financing and community organizing model to ensure the conservation of a larger watershed supplying water to urban citizens despite challenges of climate and drought

IF IF cattle ranchers and farmers agree to modify cultivation practices and grazing patterns in favor of alternative low impact methods...

THEN THEN we can mitigate one of the greatest threats to forest and watershed health and increase the likelihood of success for community and municipal efforts to manage and finance water
