Founded in 1980, Martha's Table is dedicated to finding solutions to poverty in the short term and the long term. We address emergency needs with food and clothing programs and break the long cycle of poverty with education and family strengthening programs. Each year, we provide education, food, and opportunity with: (1) Tutorial, learning, and recreational programs during the school year and the summer for approximately 300 children and youth, ages 3 months to 18 years; (2) Meals to the homeless every day of the year at numerous sites throughout the city as well as meals for senior shut-ins and community holiday meals (3) Family support services, a clothing distribution center, and information; (4) An expansive volunteer program that allows 10,000 people annually to reach out to their community; and (5) Collaborations with other organizations to best provide a wide array of services.

Note: The Impact & Results score currently has no effect on the nonprofit's Star Rating.

The Impact & Results score is a measure of how well a nonprofit delivers on its stated mission. To issue a score, Charity Navigator estimates the actual impact the nonprofit has on the lives of those it serves, and determines whether it is making good use of donor resources to achieve that impact. Learn more about our Impact & Results methodology here.

Program Activities
Martha's Table primarily provides groceries to beneficiaries. It also prepares and serves meals to beneficiaries.
Impact Statement
$2 provides a meal to a person in need.
Assessment Benchmark
Impact & Results scores of food distribution programs are based on the cost of a meal relative to the cost that a food-secure person incurs to buy a meal in that county. Programs receive an Impact & Results score of 100 if they are less than 75% the cost of a meal and a score of 75 if they are less than 125%. If a nonprofit reports impact but doesn't meet the threshold for cost-effectiveness, it earns a score of 50.
Methodology
ImpactMatters analyzed publicly available data to rate the cost-effectiveness of Martha's Table.
Data Source
Outcome data collected during the program. Martha's Table publicly reports the amount of food it provides.
Method for Attributing Outcomes
We assume that the distribution of a meal from one nonprofit's food distribution program does not diminish the amount of food distributed by any other (neighboring) food distribution program. This “counterfactual” assumption about the amount of food distributed in the absence of Martha's Table’s food distribution program implies that the benefit of a meal to a beneficiary in need constitutes a net gain; the gain is not offset by reductions in food provided to other beneficiaries in need. We therefore set the counterfactual to zero.
