The Special Olympics mission remains as vital today as it did when the movement was founded in 1968. We provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities (ID). This gives them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Our program, however, is about more than just sports. We envision a world in which people with ID lead vibrant lives grounded in ongoing physical activity, sound nutrition and a deeply held conviction to improve performance on and off the field.
No longer is it enough to provide a place for people of all abilities to come together through sport. It is time to demand uncompromising inclusion in all aspects of life. For our uprising to succeed, we need YOU. Join us in the inclusion revolution!
