Playworks believes in the power of play to bring out the best in every kid. This national organization provides safe, healthy, inclusive play and physical activity to schools at recess and throughout the entire school day. Founded in 1996, Playworks is the only nonprofit organization in the country to send trained, full-time adults, called "coaches" to low-income, urban schools. Directly and through training others, we create a place for every kid on the playground - a place where they belong, have fun and are part of the game. Playworks creates safe, inclusive school environments that allow kids to thrive. Playworks currently serves more than 1,200 schools across the United States and reaches more than 700,000 students directly and through professional training services.

Program Name: Playworks Education Energized
Problem

As a nation, we are losing our ability to thrive in our collective. The fraying of civil society is inextricably linked to failures in our public education system. Democracy depends on public schools to prepare citizens by effectively supporting the cognitive, social and emotional development of children. If we require engaged citizens, individuals who can think critically, collaborate effectively, and empathize with others, then we must teach these skills in all schools.

Strategy

Through direct service delivery and trainings, Playworks brings safe, fun, and healthy play to elementary schools and youth-serving organizations across the country. Our competency in play with kids isn’t the only driver of impact. We engage adults in play and build their capacity to model and teach the social/emotional skills kids need. School climate changes as a result, as we enable kids to be surrounded by an ever-growing circle of adults who contribute to their social/emotional development.

IF:THEN

IF If teachers and administrators of K-5 students understand the crucial value of play for young children's physical health and social, emotional, and cognitive development,...

THEN then they will commit the necessary resources to achieve adequate levels of safe, healthy play in their schools.

IF If adults and students model inclusive, healthy play, and use and promote positive language, behavior, and conflict resolution skills,...

THEN then there will be a safe, organized, and active playground where students' social and emotional skills are developed.

IF If students have strong social and emotional skills and feel more engaged on the playground and in school,...

THEN then there will be less bullying and fewer behavioral disruptions, with students better prepared to learn, which will create a more positive school climate.
