On February 27, 2018, it came to the attention of Charity Navigator that Animal Welfare League, is the subject of an investigation by the DEA according to an article titled, "DEA, state officials investigate controversial Chicago Ridge animal shelter."   • On March 1, 2018, The Chicago Tribune published an article titled, "Amid protests over conditions, authorities investigate Chicago Ridge animal shelter." For more information, please see The Chicago Tribune article.

  • On September 21, 2018, The Daily Southtown published an article titled, "Chicago Ridge animal shelter pushes back on accusations of poor conditions after positive state report." For more information, please see The Daily Southtown article.

  • In November of 2018, The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation issued a Cease and Desist to Linda Estrada, the former executive director, for practicing veterinary medicine without a license. For More Information, see page 1.

  • In December of 2018, The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation placed the organization’s certified euthanasia agency licenses on probation and issued a fine in response to an investigation and complaints of malpractice. For more information, see page 9.

Established in 1935, the Animal Welfare League saves animals' lives and works to improve the way they are treated and regarded by society. The Animal Welfare League strives to: prevent cruelty to animals, provide quality homes for animals through our adoption programs, promote respect and compassion for all creatures through education, provide shelter and care for homeless and unwanted animals, reduce pet overpopulation through our low cost spay/neuter clinic, provide veterinary care for low income pet owners, and relieve the suffering of all animals. We work to improve municipal, city and state laws and regulations regarding the treatment of animals, and operate the state's largest non-profit animal shelter program.
