The historic Music Hall, through its presentations and productions (including commissions of original artistic work), provides Southeastern Michigan with high quality performing arts programs and education that reflect the diverse mix of cultures that make up our community. Music Hall is Detroit's "People's Theater" - the place for high quality but non-elitist performing arts and education with an emphasis on dance, theater and music, particularly Jazz. Music Hall aims to be the most accessible, inclusive and culturally diverse performing arts institution in the country.

2008-09 09/20/2011 --Donor Advisory

Prior to 9/1/2016, Charity Navigator issued Advisories under the name CN Watchlist and Donor Advisory. For more information on the CN Advisory system click here. This charity was issued a DA.

This donor advisory was published on Tuesday, September 20, 2011

In accordance with our policy for removing Donor Advisories, Charity Navigator removed the Donor Advisory for Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts on March 1, 2013 because the Donor Advisory had been in place for more than a year (since September 20, 2011) and because the issues that prompted the Donor Advisory have been resolved as noted in a news report. Specifically:

  • The organization has amended its FY 2009 Form 990 to now show fundraising expenses.

Charity Navigator had published a Donor Advisory for this charity because we became aware of the following information in connection with this charity:

  • Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts had historically reported fundraising expenses on their Form 990.  But the FY 2009 listed no fundraising expenses. Based on our experience, charities only rarely are able to raise substantial sums of money without incurring any associated fundraising costs. We reached out to Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts for clarification, but did not received an adequate explanation. We were therefore unable to evaluate Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts and thus issued a Donor Advisory.
