Prison Dharma Network Inc.
Mission
Our Mission is to provide prisoners, prison staff, and prison volunteers with the most effective, evidence-based tools for self-transformation and personal & professional development. In particular, we offer and promote the use of proven effective mindfulness-based interventions (MBI’s). Our dual focus is on transforming individual lives and transforming the corrections system to mitigate its highly destructive impact on families, communities, and the overall social capital of our society.
Vision
We envision correctional institutions and community corrections programs as safe, humane, and education-focused environments that support personal transformation through proven mindfulness and body-mind awareness practices, integrated with contemporary psychology and research-based methods. We envision a restorative criminal justice system that prioritizes public safety and harm reduction rather than punishment or revenge. This includes a smaller, more cost-effective prison system that reserves secure facilities for humane, mindfulness-based programming for violent offenders, while expanding effective community-based alternatives for non-violent offenders. Through our programs, we envision faster reintegration and stronger communities, with more people working, supporting families, and contributing positively to society.
Goals
- 1.Our goal is to expand access to Prison Mindfulness Institute’s existing mindfulness-based public safety programs for incarcerated individuals and prison staff, and to train others to deliver these proven approaches in diverse correctional and community environments, increasing access to effective tools for emotional regulation, resilience, and ethical awareness.
- 2.Our goal is to develop new programs in response to constituent needs, particularly by adapting our curriculum for secure tablet platforms now available in many prisons, expanding access to high-quality mindfulness education for incarcerated individuals who cannot attend in-person programs.
- 3.Our goal is to strengthen and expand our public safety work by developing new programs, scaling effective existing initiatives, and refining our needs assessment processes to better serve corrections staff, law enforcement, first responders, and other public safety professionals.
