Adaptability Statement
30 out of 30 points
The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
In 2020 when we first started helping the Garland Animal Shelter, we were only able to sponsor one dog a month for heartworm treatment. We quickly saw that wasn't enough due to the high volume of intake at the Garland shelter.
By 2022, we were able to expand our support to include every HW+ dog that was adopted, but this meant they still had to wait for treatment until they were in a home. Also, we found that not every adopter would reach out to us to get the treatment scheduled, so some dogs never received treatment.
In early 2023, we approached the shelter about using their medical staff to treat EVERY HW+ dog as soon as it became available for adoption. Our proposal was if we covered the cost of the supplies would they administer the treatment. This would mean the dogs could even complete treatment before going home. It also meant the disease would not continue to worsen while they waited to be adopted. We started this new program in September 2023, which is the start of our fiscal year 2024.
