This organization was impacted by COVID-19 in a way that effected their financial health in 2020. This normally would have reduced their star rating. Due to the unprecedented nature of the pandemic, we give charities such as this one the opportunity to share the story of COVID's impact on them, and doing this pauses our revision of their rating. Charities may submit their own pandemic responses through their nonprofit portal.
Raritan Valley Habitat for Humanity reported being impacted by COVID-19 in the following ways:
Program Delivery
Fundraising Capacity
Revenue
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our annual fundraising Gala was not possible, and there was a time when we needed to close our Habitat ReStore. Also, some of our grantors redirected their support to COVID-19-related programming.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
The COVID-19 pandemic slowed our Habitat home-building process. Some regular volunteers chose to quarantine, and most corporate groups decided not to participate in on-site employee volunteer engagement opportunities. Also, all building on the Habitat home was halted for a short period as new safety protocols were developed and implemented. Our Home Safety and Repair Program was restricted to outdoor projects when possible due to a decrease in volunteers.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
RV Habitat adapted our operation to the pandemic in many ways. The construction team developed safety protocols for on-site work to keep the staff and volunteers safe. These protocols included smaller group sizes, mandatory masks and gloves, and tool sanitation practices. The Habitat ReStore required volunteers and shoppers to wear masks and had hand sanitation products readily available. RV Habitat put Home Safety and Repair Project requests on a waiting list unless they were “outside only” projects. RV Habitat used this time for additional program development and now offers three levels of home repair offerings that vary in project complexity. Staff worked at home. Over time the team members moved back to the office environment with the flexibility to work at home as COVID worked its way through our workforce.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
RV Habitat will continue to offer outdoor repair projects at no cost to low- and moderate-income homeowners through our Home Safety Repair Program’s Brush with Kindness offering. Also, all Board-approved program policies developed during the pandemic will remain in effect. The Habitat Home Building safety protocols will remain available for use when necessary due to a corporate groups’ desires, COVID-19 variant resurgences, or other circumstances. Safety for all remains a top priority of RV Habitat.

(RVHFH) BUILDS STRENGTH, STABILITY AND SELF-RELIANCE FOR LOW-AND MODERATE-INCOME INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES IN HUNTERDON AND SOMERSET COUNTIES THROUGH AFFORDABLLE HOME OWNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES. THE HABITAT PROGRAM IS TRULY UNIQUE; PARTNER HOMEOWNERS INVEST 250-500+ HOURS WORKING ALONGSIDE VOLUNTEERS FROM ACROSS THE COMMUNITY TO BUILD THEIR HOMES, AND, AT THE SAME TIME, BUILD BRIDGES OF UNDERSTANDING, EMPATHY AND RESPECT BETWEEN DIVERSE GROUPS. RVHFH EXTENDS A 0%-INTEREST MORTGAGE TO PARTNER HOMEOWNERS, AND, BECAUSE OF THE EXTENSIVE SUPPORT OF DEDICATED, SKILLLED VOLUNTEERS, IS ABLE TO SELL HOMES FOR A FRACTION OF THEIR MARKET VALUE. AS A RESULT, PARTNER HOMEOWNERS' MONTHLY MORTGAGE PAYMENTS ARE SIGNIFICANTLY LESS THAN THEY HAVE BEEN PAYING FOR RENT, ALLOWING THEM TO SET ASIDE MONEY EACH MONTH TO BUILD SAVINGS, OBTAIN NEEDED MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE, GO BACK TO SCHOOL TO INCREASE THEIR EARNINGS POTENTIAL AND SAVE FOR THEIR CHILDREN'S COLLEGE EDUCATION.
