How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

At the beginning of the fiscal year, HYC was contacted by several donors who have supported HYC for many years. Because their revenue to donate to nonprofit organizations comes from fundraising events, they were not going to be able to support HYC this year due to the pandemic. As a result, HYC leadership revised the annual budget to adjust for the lost revenue. Part of this adjustment included a freeze on hiring new youth coaches and a volunteer coordinator. The existing staff has been able to maintain all student needs, as well as collection and distribution of donations. However, we are anticipating student numbers and donations will increase because of our community outreach.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

As a result of COVID-19 and mandates from schools to move education to online/virtual learning, thousands of youth experiencing homelessness have faced numerous barriers to accessing education. Though HYC and its school partners worked diligently to meet the technological and basic human needs of youth who remained in school and in contact, hundreds of youth have disappeared. Arizona public schools report that over 50,000 students expected to reenroll after summer have vanished. Hundreds of youth who are newly homeless along with youth and families with historical housing instability are missing, and schools are limited in their ability to find them. Following our mission to eliminate barriers to academic success resulting from homelessness, we felt strongly that if we took a wait-and-see position, these students would likely remain in the roles they had taken on over the past year and not return to complete their education. Our answer was to implement a youth outreach plan.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

While navigating family and individual trauma, stress related to food insecurity, struggles with finances, and other stressors, these youth are likely to remain in the roles they have taken on over the past year. It is our hope that, in partnership with our districts, through home visits, well-checks, and authentic engagement, HYC can find these missing youth and bring them back to school on track to graduation and their future, while meeting their basic needs and providing ongoing support through program services. Over the past several months, HYC youth coaches have worked relentlessly to locate youth throughout the Valley who have not been engaged in school. With a list of more than 250 youth who were previously referred, previously homeless, or went missing during the school year, HYC made significant progress in identifying these youth, connecting them to resources, providing referrals, and most importantly, confirming enrollment in school and enrolling in the HYC program.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

Innovation in social services means finding new, creative, or more efficient ways to resolve problems or generate solutions to issues facing our communities. From philosophy to service delivery, infrastructure to evaluation, HYC uses innovative models and approaches in both design and execution. Typical intervention with homeless youth begins once they have already become homeless and dropped out of school, as a reactive approach. The programs available to serve homeless youth focus primarily on runaway and homeless youth who are not attending high school. Many of these programs focus on homeless youth between the ages of 18 to 24. There are few options that focus on the prevention of youth homelessness or early intervention services. HYC believes that by providing services to youth experiencing homelessness while they are still in high school, during the early stages of their housing instability, we can prevent future periods of homelessness.
