Shelter to Soldier Inc.
Mission
SHELTER TO SOLDIER is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that adopts dogs from local shelters and rescue organizations and trains them to become psychiatric service dogs for post-9/11 veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress (PTS), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and/or Military Sexual Trauma (MST). The program also places emotional support animals (ESAs) with active duty military, veterans, and first responders. The Shelter to Soldier Canine Ambassadors, a team of therapy dogs and their volunteer handlers, also provide visits of love and comfort to local military, veterans and their families. Shelter to Soldier's Morale Dog Program adopts dogs and trains them to become four-legged crew members aboard U.S. Navy ships, supporting thousands of active-duty Sailors and Marines while deployed, serving our country.
Vision
Shelter to Soldier envisions a future where every Veteran has access to the support they need to live with dignity, purpose, and renewed independence. By transforming rescued dogs into highly trained service or Morale Dogs, we aim to bridge the gap between those who serve and the resources that sustain their well-being. We strive to expand our reach so that no Veteran or active-duty service member faces the challenges of service alone. Through this work, we are building stronger communities while Saving Lives, Two at a Time.
Goals
- 1.Place 20 Psychiatric Service Dogs with Veterans in need, 5 Emotional Support Animals with active-duty military, Veterans and first responders, and 2 Morale Dogs aboard active-duty ships within the year. This goal expands access to life-saving support for both Veterans and active-duty service members, increasing capacity while maintaining the highest standards of training, care, and placement.
- 2.Expand program reach so more Veterans in need can access support. This includes building strategic partnerships with veteran-serving nonprofits, strengthening referral networks, increasing outreach through public awareness campaigns, and leveraging our Canine Ambassadors therapy teams to connect with communities, raise awareness, and engage Veterans who may not yet know help is available.
- 3.Expand our animal care and training capacity through a new (second) campus where STS can grow its impact, increase the number of dogs in training, and directly serve more veterans in need through service dog and emotional support animal programs.
