How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
Donations to our organization declined by over 60%. We also applied and received a PPP loan and were thus able to keep our full staff employed.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
With spurts of civil unrest, inflation, kidnapping, and COVID we were not able to lead trips to Haiti, which is typically how we grow and maintain our church and individual partners. We also had to move our Upstream staff out of Haiti. Our largest grant recipient, a school in Cite Soleil, had to meet in various off-site locations for several nearly a year.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
Our staff continued to work remotely with our grantee recipients as best they could to continue our programs. Our largest grant recipient, a school in Cite Soleil, re-opened in November, after months of meeting off-site. Our executive director was able to make a couple of trips to Haiti to distribute emergency food and much needed funds. We increased our online presence tremendously and focused fundraising efforts on classroom, instead of individual student, sponsorships.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
We will continue to focus on classroom sponsorships, instead of individual students. We have been working with a local person in Haiti to photograph our students and school for marketing purposes and to communicate with our classroom sponsors. We will continue to utilize his services, even after the pandemic, instead of using our own staff for this work.

Who are the people you serve with your mission? Describe briefly.
We serve very poor, distressed and underprivileged people and communities in Haiti. As a 4th world country, it is difficult for most Americans to even comprehend or imagine the living conditions that exist in Haiti, especially sinde the recent earthquake and assassination of their President.

Our goal is to empower people who help people. We are in constant communication with our partners and the leaders of the community we serve helping to make sure they have the resources they need. The Haitian people have way, way less than any of Americans can imagine, yet they continue to survive with joy and thankfulness. Working alongside and assisting, rather than just "doing for" these people helps empower them, giving them credibility, support and influence in their community.
What challenges does your organization face in collecting feedback from the people you serve?
We don't have any major challenges to collecting feedback
Briefly describe a recent change that your organization made in response to feedback from the people you serve.
We added more funding to our feeding program, as we learned that the cost for food, charcoal, and oil needed to prepare meals for our students has skyrocketed in price, so the school was just providing snacks on Fridays instead of a full meal to the students. Our in-country partners explained that they were unable to get food for the community we serve because rioters and protesters were blocking their way to and from the market. Our founder made connections with locals to provide security protection and with another non-profit that had access to many pre-packaged meals so that we could get the desperately needed food to our community.
