The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
After doing disaster relief rescue missions in numerous hurricanes in the U.S. and the Bahamas, our FUR Urgent Transport team completed multiple rescue missions on the ground in Ukraine to assist people and animals in danger.
Not only was this far from home, but the magnitude and scale of the disaster was unprecedented in our lifetime. While there were many organizations wanting to help, there was no coordinated response. The situation on the ground was best described as loosely organized chaos.
Our team networked and coordinated with other rescues and shelters, planning, coordinating and implementing rescue missions with international partners from: Poland, Ireland, Sweden, Germany, France, Romania, Portugal, the U.K., Austria, Italy and Ukraine.
We helped refugees evacuate with their pets, we reunited stranded animals with their owners outside the country, and we rescued animals in danger. On every mission, we brought in supplies for people and animals, before bringing animals and people back out.
As the crisis mounted, it became more and more difficult to get across the border to Poland from Ukraine. We went to different border crossings, we recruited additional volunteers, and we adapted on the fly. We even made a detour to Romania, where the animals were quarantined before moving them to rescues and shelters in France and Germany.
The situation on the ground and at the borders constantly changed, but we adapted to changes on the fly to help save lives. The distance and magnitude of the crisis was far greater than anything we had dealt with before, but our team responded to the challenge, stayed flexible and adapted to changes and challenges as they occurred.
Since then, we reunited with partners from Poland and the U.K. in Antakya, Turkey to assist with disaster relief after the devastating earthquakes.
Every disaster is different, and we have to adapt to each situation. In every case, we help people and animals in danger wherever we can.
