The Baltimore Council on Foreign Affairs Incorporated
Mission
The Baltimore Council on Foreign Affairs is a private, not-for-profit, non-partisan, non-position-taking, open membership, public service association dedicated to citizen education in foreign affairs. It was founded in 1980 by broadly representative and distinguished community leaders. Lectures, seminars, discussions and studies are addressed to several audiences: established and developing leadership, international professionals, the attentive citizenry, youth, and not-yet attentive public. The Baltimore Council on Foreign Affairs is purely a local organization in programming, governance and support.
Vision
A sustained foreign policy in the world's leading democracy is only possible with an informed public, and our goal at then Baltimore Council is to provide the inside story on what's gone wrong and what's gone right and where the next challenges lie. What went wrong in Afghanistan? How can peace come to the Middle East? Who's committed war crimes in the Gaza war? How did Sudan become the world's worst humanitarian crisis? We chart the wars in Ukraine and Myanmar with blogs that are regularly updated. And we serve as a platform for debate on problems that the major governments are avoiding but that the next generation will inherit, such as the. plight of the forced displaced, 120 million people who have lost their homes due to war crimes. We don't claim to have all the answers, but we'e encouraging everyone to ask the pertinent questions.
Goals
- 1.Our current membership is well-informed and well-educated on foreign affairs, and loyal to the Council, but we want to attract new, younger members. We seek to partner with the secondary schools, universities and with the major humanitarian NGO's. We currently run a strong program of expert speakers once a month. But in light of the perilous times we live in, we plan to double that.
- 2.We recently launched a program for High Schools that will engage students in a national competition on foreign affairs issues. Our goal is to recruit three to five public and private schools for a pilot project. Next year, we intend to expand to dozens of schools around Maryland, northern Virginia and the District of Colombia. We will invite all taking part to attend our monthly speakers' series.
- 3.Building on our programs on crisis of the forced displaced (120 million and growing), we will collaborate with colleges and universities as well as the leading humanitarian agencies headquartered in Baltimore to hold seminars, workshops and possibly a conference for college students to put the spotlight on an issue major governments including the USG are practically ignoring.
