National Trust for Historic Preservation
Mission
The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a privately funded nonprofit organization that saves America’s historic places to enrich our present and our future. Chartered by Congress in 1949, the National Trust manages a portfolio of 28 National Trust Historic Sites and leads grantmaking and advocacy efforts for thousands more historic places across the United States, collaborating with a variety of partners to build vibrant and sustainable communities with historic places and neighborhoods; facilitating public participation in the preservation of sites, buildings, and objects of national significance; and striving to create a cultural legacy that is as diverse as the nation itself so that all of us can take pride in our shared American story.
Vision
The writing of American history has been incomplete with a focus on an exclusive narrative, but historic places tell a richer and truer story of our shared past. That’s why the National Trust works to tell a fuller American story that does justice to the contributions of women, people of color, the LGBTQ community, and all Americans in shaping our nation and leading us forward. The expansion of this story inspires us all to take pride in our shared heritage, respect the contributions of others, and work together to create an even more perfect union for generations to come. The National Trust aspires to create a cultural legacy that is as textured and diverse as the American experience, so that all people can see their stories in the places around them. We do this work to strengthen the social, physical, and economic fabric of our cities and communities, inspire a new generation, and create a stronger, more united future for our nation.
Goals
- 1.Saving America's Historic Sites: We steward historic sites. We advocate, engage the public, and take direct to defend, protect, and preserve historic places around the country.
- 2.Building Stronger Communities: We are building stronger communities by using preservation as a tool to address equity, affordability, climate-resiliency, and social justice.
- 3.Investing in Preservation's Future: We are leading the preservation movement to be more effective, inclusive, and responsive to create a strong foundation for the future of our field.
