Blue Ridge Literacy
Mission
The mission of Blue Ridge Literacy (BRL) is to help adults achieve their life goals through literacy skills. Since 1985, Blue Ridge Literacy has been the leading nonprofit organization to offer year-round literacy services to American and foreign-born adults in the Roanoke Valley. We do this by offering one-on-one literacy tutoring, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Class programs, Citizenship Preparation classes, and English and Digital Literacy services. Our service area covers the cities of Roanoke and Salem and the counties of Roanoke, Bedford, Botetourt, Franklin, Alleghany, and Craig.
Vision
Blue Ridge Literacy envisions a future where all adults in the Roanoke Valley have equitable access to literacy and language skills that empower them to achieve their goals, contribute to their communities, and lead fulfilling lives. Over the past 40 years, Blue Ridge Literacy has evolved to meet the changing needs of adult learners and address pressing community matters. Our vision is to continue equipping adult English learners with the literacy skills and information needed to navigate daily life, access opportunities, and improve living conditions. Through strong community partnerships, BRL bridges informational gaps for learners, many of whom are new to the United States, connecting them with vital resources and services. In the long term, we envision a community where immigrants and refugees are fully prepared to overcome challenges and actively contribute to a thriving, inclusive society.
Goals
- 1.Expand Literacy Opportunities BRL continues to increase access to English, health, financial, and digital literacy. We have developed multiple study options, including online and in-person ESOL and Citizenship Preparation classes, and built partnerships with healthcare professionals and other service providers.
- 2.Diversify Learning Environments We have successfully diversified our learning environments by offering varied options to enhance learning experiences. In response to the lessons learned during the pandemic, we continue to offer flexible learning environments to address health and digital literacy gaps.
- 3.Strengthen Organizational Support and Public Awareness The Board has focused on strengthening leadership and support for BRL staff, while also broadening public awareness and mission promotion efforts. These actions are vital to enhancing organizational capacity and expanding BRL’s geographical reach.
