In 2021, the Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers of Gold Country Wildlife Rescue participated in various data-gathering activities that provided the basis for strategic planning meetings held on July 10 and 17, 2021, to develop and adopt a Strategic Plan to guide our programs, services, and organizational development. Members of the Board and the Development Director regularly participate in Nonprofit Leadership Training opportunities hosted by the Placer Community Foundation. This participation includes the most recent training, “Integrating Diversity, Equity & Inclusion into Board Service,” on March 30, 2022.

Gold Country Wildlife Rescue’s external mobilization efforts include: Our work as part of the Wildlife Disaster Network (WDN) to volunteer our services, facilities, and expertise to provide medical and rehabilitative care to the wildlife victims of a disaster. The WDN is a network of volunteer veterinarians, biologists, and wildlife rehabilitation specialists, coordinated under the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. An outreach program that includes our website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube as well as email updates and mailers. Each provides information on the wildlife in our care and topics of interest guided by our mission to advance public awareness of the critical role of wildlife within our shared ecosystems. Board member and staff participation in Placer Community Foundation workshops to strengthen our organization through training and development opportunities in a forum that supports a collaboration that enhances the work of the region’s nonprofits.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
Within the last year, the external changes brought about by climate change resulted in more orphaned and injured wildlife at our facility than at any point in our 30-year history. Drought and wildfires impacted habitats, forcing wildlife into populated areas in search of food, water, and space. Vegetation management activities designed to prevent wildfire destroyed countless dens and nests resulting in thousands of orphaned wildlife in need of care. With the support of an energized volunteer program, we constructed additional enclosures to expand our rehabilitation program that prepares wildlife for release. This created additional space at our facility to provide care to the new wildlife we received each day. We refreshed our social media program to share the stories of wildlife impacted by drought and wildfire to seek donations to obtain the food, medical supplies, and resources to care for these animals.
