The Fistula Foundation
Mission
Fistula Foundation, the global leader in fistula treatment, provides more life-transforming fistula repair surgeries than any other organization in the world. Our mission is to end the needless suffering of women who experience obstetric fistula and other childbirth injuries. We believe that no woman should endure a life of misery and isolation simply for trying to bring a child into the world. Obstetric fistula leaves a woman incontinent, ashamed, and—all too often—outcast from her family and her community. Across Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, hundreds of thousands of women suffer from the condition today. The only cure for fistula is surgery, and expert repair surgery has a high success rate. We partner with local hospitals to provide free surgeries to women who otherwise could not afford this life-transforming care.
Vision
We have a vision to bring the suffering caused by obstetric fistula to an end in all countries where this condition persists today. Within a generation, we can create a world where women with fistula receive healing in a matter of days, not years—where these women flourish in their communities instead of languishing in the shadows. We call this vision “In It to End It.” Our ultimate goal is to reach and serve women with fistula on a scale that equals the urgency of their suffering. We are uniquely proficient at empowering local outreach and surgery providers to find and treat women in their communities. By addressing a long-neglected gap in healthcare access for some of the poorest, least powerful women in the world, we and our partners disrupt deep systems related to extreme poverty and gender inequity. Crucially, our work conveys the message that these women have value, and that their healing should be a global health priority.
Goals
- 1.SURGERY GROWTH: Ultimately, our work focuses on one measurable outcome—the number of life-changing surgeries that we can provide to women who suffer from devastating childbirth injuries such as fistula. Since 2009, we have supported more than 125,000 surgeries for women in need. Our core objective is to boost revenue and program capacity so that we can keep increasing our surgery total each year.
- 2.PARTNER GROWTH: We rely on a growing network of 100+ partners—local hospitals and outreach organizations—in 35+ countries that know how best to serve women in their communities. We also have Fistula Foundation Treatment Networks that amplify impact by connecting partners to reach more women in more places, refer complex cases to expert surgeons, and train the next generation of providers.
- 3.TRAINING + CAPACITY BUILDING: We support partner-led training and upskilling for 250+ surgeons, while also implementing a new mentorship program for 20 surgeons that is focused on advanced skills and immersive training. All of this is complemented by a bilingual webinar series for surgeons, nurses, and community health workers to build enduring local capacity.
