Kotor Kitties' mission is to remove all barriers to high volume spay-neuter of cats and dogs in the small Balkan Ccuntry of Montenegro. In addition to free or pay-as-you can spay-neuter surgeries, we provide equipment and training in Trap-Neuter-Return of community cats , humane education for responsible care, resources and training for veterinarians interested in keeping up-to-date, and community connections for equipment, transport, recovery care, and other needed resources. Prevention is the kindest and most cost-effective way to help when a country's animal population is out of control. (Less)

Who are the people you serve with your mission? Describe briefly.
People who are interested in or affected by the overpopulation of companion animals in Montenegro. We have two primary groups we serve: 1) The local population in Montenegro, whether or not they like animals. It is a very poor country, with little ethnic diversity. There is a Roma community, which is largely ostracized and vilified; it is economically more disadvantaged than most. The majority religion is Serbian Orthodox, with some Roman Catholic and a sizeable Muslim population. In the SW part of the country there is a large population of Albanians. Political alignment is also an important factor in the population, leading to jobs. 2) Tourists from around the world, who visit Montenegro and find the conditions of the community cats and dogs to be abhorrent.

We are working on pilot programs to spay-neuter owned dogs and to involve the Roma community in services for their animals. New in fall 2022 is more formal outreach, recruitment and training of local Montenegrin caretakers and volunteers, and using the feedback of those informally involved to help shape the direction of the project.

What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?
Kotor Kitties uses social media and a set of websites in English, Montenegrin, and Russian to connect and mobilize the community. Our volunteers and veterinarians participate in TV and radio interviews, and distribute flyers and posters promoting spay-neuter and TNR. We also offer online training with internationally recognized programs to bilingual speakers in Montenegro, who are then prepared to help others learn and mobilize. A new grant from WTG will allow us to translate materials for veterinarians and community volunteers in 2023-24, and begin to produce training and outreach materials locally in 2025-26.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
As tourist donations dropped, our volunteers who manage requests for spay-neuter services quickly set up a waiting list, juggling priorities of pregnant cats, colony targeting, and pending adoptions as funds became available. We also increased the number of grant applications we submitted, enabling us to double the number of free spay-neuter surgeries we provided in 2021.
