Ryans Case for Smiles
Mission
A HOSPITAL STAY CAN BE A TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE FOR A CHILD - ESPECIALLY THOSE WITH CANCER AND OTHER LIFE-CHANGING ILLNESSES. RECENT RESEARCH INDICATES 20% OF CHILDREN WHO ARE HOSPITALIZED WITH CANCER AND 30% OF THEIR MOTHERS SUFFER FULL SYMPTOMS OF POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD). THESE RATES ARE COMPARABLE TO THAT EXPERIENCED BY U.S. WAR VETERANS SERVING SINCE THE VIETNAM WAR. THE GOOD NEWS IS TRAUMA CAN BE MINIMIZED AND OUTCOMES IMPROVED THROUGH EXPERIENCES THAT REDUCE STRESS. THE ORGANIZATION WAS FOUNDED IN 2007 TO BRING COMFORT AND SUPPORT TO YOUNG PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES IN HOSPITALS AROUND THE GLOBE. WE STARTED WITH A SIMPLE GOAL: TO CREATE AND DISTRIBUTE WHIMSICAL PILLOWCASES THAT GIVE CHILDREN AN EMOTIONAL BOOST AND REMIND THEM THAT THEY ARE NOT DEFINED BY THEIR ILLNESS. TODAY, OUR PROGRAMS HAVE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE THE CHILDREN'S ENTIRE FAMILIES SO THEY CAN BETTER NAVIGATE AND COPE WITH A VERY DIFFICULT EXPERIENCE AND AVOID LONG TERM EMOTIONAL DRAMA.
Vision
To help children and families cope with illness today while building resilience for the future. In short, to feel better to heal better!
Goals
- 1.Ensure every eligible child receives a cheerful pillowcase making their room less sterile helping them feel special and putting a smile on their faces during treatment. RCFS helps with the stress and emotional impact of illness. Our fun pillowcases give children an emotional boost to children living with cancer and other illnesses. RCFS has delivered nearly 3M pillowcases to 360 hospitals.
- 2.Offer caregivers the knowledge they need to help their families cope with a child’s illness or injury through CopingSpace.org, webinars, and programs. Up to 80% of children and their families report traumatic stress reactions following a life-threatening illness or injury. CopingSpace provides research-informed resources to deal with the stresses while building resilience for the future.
- 3.Become the leader in sibling support for families, healthcare, and pediatric disease organizations. The sibling of a child with an illness or injury is an experience that puts them at high risk of PTSD. Siblings often feel confused, upset, afraid, angry, jealous, or guilty. RCFS has developed resources to support these children. We provide Coping Boxes for siblings to support their needs.
