The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year
For 38 years, we've served Idaho's children battling cancer by hosting camps for children, teens, siblings, and families. After turning away too many children and struggling with the fact there are no fully accessible camp facilities in Idaho for kids (or adults) with disabilities or medical challenges — we purchased Hidden Paradise.
Hidden Paradise is an accessible, medically designed camp for Camp Rainbow Gold programs and other nonprofits. In 2020, our medical team charged us to find a way to have in-person camps in 2021. Our kids are experts when it comes to quarantining, and everyone realized they needed face-to-face camp.
In one year, we remodeled 14 buildings to hold (smaller due to COVID) in-person camps in 2021. We went from cabins featuring a light scent of fresh skunk and shag pink carpet to donated new floors, window blinds, and paint. We got new bunk beds, remodeled a commercial kitchen, added ADA bathrooms, and built an outdoor dining area over a crumbling swimming pool.
By hosting four camps in 2021, we not only saved $130,000 in rental fees but experienced a "soft opening” for Hidden Paradise. But our entire focus was on the kids and our mission. With enormous help from donors, volunteers, builders, contractors, and the entire community — we did it.
But we are not done yet. Blue Cross of Idaho has donated a new Health Center and Black Rock Homes has donated new cabins and shower houses needed to expand camps back to full size. We need infrastructure in place, and a large new lodge that can fully support our camps, plus all the other groups so patiently waiting and lining up to use the property.
We're still adapting to bring this entire vision to life. We're building Idaho’s only medically accessible camp— a camp that will serve not only our cancer kids and families, but other nonprofits and organizations across the state who are also supporting children and adults faced with medical, physical, and mental challenges.
