Think Outside the Vox
Mission
Think Outside the Vox closes the gap between Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, and disabled patrons, and artists, BIPOC/AAPI/marginalized/disabled access providers, and arts organizations, which are often inaccessible. We train and facilitate hiring of Deaf, Blind DeafBlind, disabled, and marginalized professionals to develop and diversify the voices of accessibility in the arts sector. Vox collaborates with theaters, museums, cultural institutions, and arts organizations to improve accessibility practices, remove barriers, and amplify Disability Justice & Joy in these spaces. We provide arts access consulting and training that centers on disability culture for arts institutions. We aim to implement measurable change within the sector by customizing access plans equitably and sustainably.
Vision
We aim to dismantle systemic and programmatic hurdles such as limited knowledge, apprehensions, budgetary constraints, and insular networks. Creating System-wide Change Our initiatives lead to broader impacts by: Boosting the proficiency and cultural competency of access providers. Enlightening and educating arts leaders and creatives. Delivering vital access services to existing and prospective audience members. Creating employment for marginalized workers.(Deaf/HH/Blind/LV/disabled/BIPOC/AAPI/LGBTQ+) Shaping the Arts Community Our ambition is to foster growth and culture shift in arts organizations, their personnel, leaders, and the wider community to include more access points in their offerings and more Deaf, Blind, disabled and culturally competent experts on their teams.
Goals
- 1.A small increase in trained professionals expands service delivery and creates jobs for underemployed groups. Our Culturally Competent Audio Description (CCAD) Training grew Boston’s AD providers from 3 to 30 Blind/BIPOC professionals using a paid train-the-trainer model, with more on the waitlist. We’re replicating this in New York City and in the ASL to increase BIPOC and Deaf professionals.
- 2.Blind, Deaf/disabled people face disproportionate risks in emergencies due to poor preparedness. Vox found most arts institutions lack protocols for disabled staff and patrons. To address this, disability-led Vox and Blind-owned GetBraille will launch a free, fully accessible, self-paced 4-hour online Emergency Preparedness Training for 100 MA participants, improving safety and future planning.
- 3.In response to reduced federal and DEAI funding, we diversified income and expanded consulting-based Program Revenue. In the first 7 months of 2025, revenue doubled from 2024, reaching $150,078 (499% growth) with a 2025 projection of $170,000. Funding sources shifted from 73% grants in 2024 to 62% Program Revenue YTD, reflecting stronger financial sustainability.
