San Francisco Waldorf School Association
Mission
With love and devotion, San Francisco Waldorf School strives to nourish the unique capacities of every student, that in each may awaken the critical and creative intelligence to envision the future, the compassion and commitment to understand others, and the courage to be a free and active participant in our common human experience.
Vision
By centering the relationship of teachers to students, and students to their peers, we create classrooms that are filled with vitality, where young people are empowered to explore and take risks. In our classrooms, students learn to appreciate their differences, develop language to describe those differences, and enjoy the expanded creative potential of a diverse group. Teachers create lessons using the senses (including the senses of safety and warmth), movement, speech and story, artistic expression, and critical thinking, to enable students to deeply explore the curriculum and make it their own. The result is joyful, engaged students, highly creative work products, and expansive discussions. As they learn about the world and the peoples and ideas that make up the world, San Francisco Waldorf students come to know themselves.
Goals
- 1.We strive to become a school whose demographics reflect the broad diversity of the Bay Area. We know that becoming a truly inclusive community, where each person sees themselves reflected, is an ongoing process that calls us to continuously develop our capacity for deep commitment and genuine respect: qualities that lie at the heart of our mission.
- 2.Waldorf education should be accessible to all regardless of current financial circumstances. We are building a school population that reflects the economic diversity of the Bay Area community through our Equitable Tuition Program. Forty percent of SFWS families currently participate in the program, enabling students to attend our school who otherwise would not be able to afford Waldorf education.
- 3.We’re committed to connecting people with the natural world, reducing our carbon footprint and preserving green space. Our students grow food, compost, observe scientific processes at work and experience local flora and fauna during outings to the Presidio. They participate in wilderness excursions, trips to observe marine life and study coastal ecology, and use local materials in their classes.
